In July of 1999, City of Hope began a one-year clinical fellowship in urologic oncology. Over the last three years, this fellowship has become one of the only, if not the only, laparoscopic/minimally invasive urology oncology fellowships available in the United States. Additionally, we are one of the few institutions routinely performing standard and daVinci radical prostatectomy.
Eligibility
This fellowship is reserved for a board eligible, recently graduated urologist seeking additional expertise in laparoscopic surgery, specifically in urologic oncology. An additional academic year and basic science training is available.
Responsibilities
The fellow is responsible for all in-patient care and operates typically four days per week with anyone of the four current urologic oncology faculty. All urologic oncology faculty are fellowship-trained and members of the Society of Urologic Oncology. The fellow is currently supported clinically by a nurse practitioner and a physician assistant. In addition, the fellow is responsible for giving four academic talks on different aspects of urologic oncology during the academic year.
The fellow is responsible for organizing the pathology conference, which occurs monthly in conjunction with Dr. Lawrence Weiss, Chief of Pathology. He or she is expected to attend the monthly meeting at the Los Angeles Urological Society and is encouraged to present abstracted data at any of the major urological meetings, and to present author manuscripts accordingly.
Based on current occupancy levels, the fellow would be anticipated to participate in the surgical care and management of approximately 250-300 laparoscopic radical prostatectomies; 40-50 laparoscopic cystoprostatectomies with urinary diversion; 30-40 laparoscopic nephrectomies; 5-10 laparoscopic retro peritoneal lymph node dissections; and 5-10 open retro peritoneal lymph node dissections for advanced testicular cancer treated with chemotherapy, a small number (5-10) of large renal cells with or without caval thrombus that would not be amenable to laparoscopic management. A variety of other endoscopic, endourologic and general urology cases occur throughout the year.
