| Teenagers who begin smoking often try to quit, unsuccessfully. According to a recent study in the American Journal of Public Health, many teen smokers try to break the habit within two and a half months of the first puff, but their growing cravings, withdrawal symptoms and tolerance work against them. Over time, they gradually increase their frequency of smoking — growing to monthly within nine months, and every day within less than two years. Many find themselves helpless to quit. Study researchers hope that by understanding the addiction process, they can determine the best way to help kids break the habit before it gets out of control. |
