Did you know?

Even though scientists finished the Human Genome Project in 2003, they still aren’t sure about the exact number of genes in our genetic blueprint. According to the project’s Web site, most estimates range between 20,000 to 25,000 genes — far fewer than earlier estimates of 100,000. Scientists aren’t certain why the number is so much lower than expected, but some think that each gene can do more than just make a single protein. One thing is certain: our genomes are far more flexible and complicated than originally thought.
