| Q&A: The lowdown on diagnoses and decisions |
| Medical test results have come in, and you get some bad news. What’s next? A leading City of Hope cancer physician gives expert suggestions on how to get a second opinion and ask the right questions. |
| If it’s March, it’s time for a gut check |
| Despite awareness efforts, colorectal cancer remains the second-leading cause of cancer deaths. Fortunately, modern medicine offers ways to find these cancers when they’re just beginning. |
| They navigate the maze of medicine |
| Patients have enough to worry about when diagnosed with a serious illness, so City of Hope has started a one-on-one pilot program to get them the help they need as they go through their cancer journeys. |
| Not all states are created equal when it comes to cancer. The proportion of residents who develop cancer can vary significantly from Alabama to Wyoming — and states in between. According to the American Cancer Society, recent overall cancer incidence rates were lowest in Arizona, Hawaii, New Mexico and Utah, and highest in Rhode Island, Louisiana, New Jersey and Maine. Researchers suspect socioeconomic status, differences between rural and urban life, local differences in public health initiatives, varying population characteristics and barriers to care may play a part. More information on 2008 cancer rates is available online. |
| Colonoscopy |

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and there’s no better time to schedule a routine screening test. Colonoscopy is a simple and painless test that can detect colon cancer before it starts.
To learn more about screening or schedule a colonoscopy at City of Hope, call 800-826-HOPE (4673). |
