| Lung cancer's days as a tough-to-detect disease might be numbered. City of Hope investigators found DNA markers that can hint at the presence of the most common form of the cancer, foreshadowing potential diagnostics. |
| Within hours of quitting smoking, an ex-smoker's elevated blood pressure and heart rate return to normal. In the long term, according to studies, quitting at about age 30 reduces the chance of dying from smoking-related diseases such as lung cancer by more than 90 percent. Residents of the District of Columbia, Michigan, Georgia and California must have gotten the message, because 60 percent or more of their smokers have attempted to quit, making them the nation's leaders in trying to kick the habit, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Tips on quitting are available from the National Cancer Institute's Tobacco Control Research Branch. |
