Vice President for Basic Research Operations
Kristine Justus, Ph.D., is vice president of basic research operations at City of Hope, overseeing business functions of Beckman Research Institute. Her areas of responsibility include research cost analysis, grants and contracts, research personnel and recruitment, laboratory facilities and shared resources.
Justus joined City of Hope in 2005 as manager of scientific writing and editing. In 2007, she became director of the office of faculty and institutional support. She has contributed to the successful acquisition of several important institutional grants including the Cancer Center Support Grant and the W.M. Keck Foundation Award. She is currently a course coordinator for Writing for Success, a writing course for clinical fellows in the City of Hope Clinical Investigations Training Program.
Prior to joining City of Hope, Justus conducted independent research and taught in the Department of Entomology at the University of California, Riverside. Previously, she was a lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta, and a research scientist at the Alberta Research Council in Vegreville, Alberta.
Prior to her academic career, Justus held several positions in administration with progressively increasing levels of responsibility.
Justus has authored several internationally respected publications and has edited scientific and non-scientific books. She is a member of the Cancer Center Administrators Forum, the Sigma Xi Research Society and the Council of Science Editors. She also serves as a reviewer for numerous scientific journals including Cell and Tissue Research, Journal of Neuroscience Methods and Journal of Chemical Ecology.
Justus earned her bachelor’s degree with distinction in biological sciences and her doctorate in entomology from the University of Alberta.
