Director, Beckman Research Institute
Deputy Director, Comprehensive Cancer Center
Professor, Division of Molecular Medicine
Richard Jove, Ph.D., a pioneer in identifying STAT proteins as new molecular targets for cancer therapy, joined City of Hope in August 2005 and was named director of Beckman Research Institute in January 2008.
As director of Beckman Research Institute, Jove guides the institute’s overall academic research direction and facilitates collaborations among basic scientists and clinical investigators. He especially encourages collaborations that boost City of Hope’s mission of rapidly translating scientific discoveries into new treatments while continuing the institute’s tradition of excellence in innovative biomedical research.
In his additional capacity as deputy director of City of Hope’s National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Jove plays a key role in leading a major, cancer center-wide effort to develop the next generation of more effective and less toxic drugs for treatment of cancer. He is co-leader of the Developmental Cancer Therapeutics Program and also professor in the Division of Molecular Medicine.
Prior to joining City of Hope, Jove served as director of the Molecular Oncology Program and associate director of basic research at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Florida. Earlier in his career, he was a tenured faculty member at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, where he also served as director of molecular oncology.
Jove has published more than 150 original research articles in peer-reviewed journals and has received numerous honors during his career, including the Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Fund Postdoctoral Fellowship at Rockefeller University, the American Cancer Society Junior Faculty Research Award at the University of Michigan, and the Morsani Endowed Chair in Molecular Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center.
Jove earned his doctorate in molecular biology from Columbia University and received postdoctoral training in cancer research at Rockefeller University. The National Institutes of Health has continuously funded Jove’s research for more than two decades, since he established his independent laboratory.
